All are held on the club’s new “sport court” surface, also known as a “snap court”, at 8266 Lokus Rd, Suite 110, just off Route 32 in Odenton. Details are on the club website or you can download a registration form.

NIT qualifier assignments listed

December 2nd, 2010

The USFHA has released the list of qualifying indoor tournament assignments for the newly expanded National Indoor Tournament and most area teams will not be traveling as far as last year, though one SPark U16 team has been assigned to a qualifier in Massachusetts.

Below are the lists of who goes where. To see the entire field for a particular qualifier, click on the line in each qualifier that says how many will advance.

More details about the NIT are on the USFHA site. Note that this year the U16 and U19 groups are split up, with U19s going to Richmond on the traditional first weekend in March and the U16s heading to Virginia Beach the next weekend.

(DISCLAIMER: This information is from the USFHA website and there are some discrepancies in some places, such as only 27 teams listed in the Richmond U16 qualifier and 22 for the Parkerford U19 event. Or 22 teams for the Millersville U19 qualifier, two more than the site says are assigned there.)

Indoor videos

November 30th, 2010

And just because we can, here’s some interesting indoor hockey videos from Germany (hat tip to Jesse Larsen).

Check out the one embedded below. If you’re any kind of indoor hockey fan, this is some fabulous stuff — the passing is awesome. And it’s interesting how far the players dribble with the ball up the floor and how little the ball hits the boards.

Men’s hockey group gives grant for boys team

November 30th, 2010

The Men’s Field Hockey Foundation ( yes, there is really such an organization) has provided a grant to the just-organized SPark Boys Program, to support its efforts to start and train a boys team for the National Indoor Tournament, according to Tee Goh.

The Foundation’s goal is to support the development of male participation in the great sport of field hockey in the USA.

With the SPark program, there are now two groups of boys in the DC area playing field hockey on a regular basis. Organizers are hoping to have some competitiion between the SPark boys and the dcDragons.

If any club is interested in starting a boys program, and is looking for some financial help, please contact the Men’s Field Hockey Foundation via Tee Goh.

Final Festival results, finally

November 26th, 2010

[UPDATE 9pm 11/29/10: Our friends at US Field Hockey finally updated a few more of the results pages, so we've updated the results below. Still no finals from the K pool. Sigh.]

Despite a handful of MD/DC teams having a shot at winning their pools after two days at the National Hockey Festival in Arizona, just one — Shore — managed to close the deal.

Two — Southeast Storm and H2O — finished second in their pools, just missing out on the top spot.

Here are the results for the Maryland/DC clubs all in one place. (We hunt them down so you don’t have to!) The results for every pool at Festival are here — the links to the individual standings change every time USFHA updates the results, so don’t bother trying to bookmark them.

In the standings, each team was in a seven-team pool, all played six games. Where they finished in each pool is after their record. Pools are next to the team name (use the link above to find and see the entire pool).

U16
Team (pool) W-L-T
(place)
TNT (V) 3-2-1 (3rd)
Rising Sun Sharks (Z) 2-2-2 (5th)
Spitfire (YY) 1-3-2 (6th)
Club Applebee England (X) 1-4-1 (6th)
Jackals (Y) 0-5-1 (7th)
U19
Team (pool) W-L-T
(place)
Shore (K) 4-0-1 (1st)*
Southeast Storm Green (N) 5-0-1 (2nd)
H2O (S) 4-0-2 (2nd)
Capitol Pegasus Eagles (Q) 2-2-2 (4th)
Team Maryland Riptide (U) 2-2-2 (3rd)
MavSports 1 (T) 1-2-3 (5th)
The Green Turtle (U) 2-3-1 (4th)
Jackals (G) 1-3-2 (5th)
Maryland United (S) 0-3-3 (6th)
Club Applebee USA (J) 1-4-1 (6th)
SPark (E) 1-5-0 (7th)
Spitfire (R) 1-5-0 (7th)

* USFHA lists Shore as the champion of its pool but had not updated the record to include the last game as of 8 am Sunday 9 pm 11/29/10. Nor have the results for pools T or Q been updated.

Going into the last day, three of the U19 clubs from this area were in good shape with no losses. H2O needed to knock off the 4-0 Kathdin FHC to win the pool but ended up with a 1-1 tie. Even still, the club finished without a loss.

Southeast Storm was in a tougher pool, with two others sitting at 4-0 and 3-0-1 at the start of action on Sunday. Southeast took care of 4-0 team, Impact, which also ended up losing ANOTHER game to finish 4-2. The other 3-0-1 team, Hockey Rocks, also won its two last games and since its tie was with Southeast on the first day (0-0), the winner of the pool came down to goal differential. Southeast scored 17 and allowed only 1, but Hockey Rocks put in 23 and allowed 2.

Shore was in good shape atop its pool on Sunday morning, needing only to beat the second-place 2-0-2 team and not lose to a 1-3-1 team to claim the pool. We’re still waiting for USHFA to remember to update the pool results.

Pool T is this year’s version of the Tie Pool, since after two days every single team had at least one tie, with two, including Mavsports, having THREE ties and three teams with two ties. Five of the seven teams have mustered just one win, with the current leader, Stealth, having a whopping two wins. And two ties, of course. (We’re still waiting 12 hours after the tournament ended for USFHA to update those results with Sunday’s games. )

When all was said and done, there were THREE teams with three ties. Stealth won the pool with four wins and two ties. Everybody else had one or two wins.

The group had problems getting the ball into the cage, with Stealth mustering a total of 11 goals, but eight of those came in two games. The next closest goal total was seven, and that team finished sixth because they also allowed nine goals. There were five games with 0-0 ties and a bunch of 1-0 scores.

It’s worth hunting down (use the link above and navigate to Pool T) and having a look at the standings and results. Bizarre!

Over in the U16 division, TNT was theoretically in a position to win its pool Sunday, but it had to defeat WC Eagles (at 4-0 with 20 goals for and none allowed) and a 0-3-1 team AND hope that a 2-1-1 team also beat the Eagles.

Didn’t happen.

The Eagles put a 4-1 whupping on TNT and a 4-0 beating on South Jersey Edge and that was that for TNT. The Eagles finished unbeaten and gave up only one goal in six games, that being to TNT.

SPark organizing a boys program

November 24th, 2010

Boys Flyer

The SPark club in Odenton is organizing a U19 boys indoor program with the goal of sending a boys team to the National Indoor Tournament in March. Any boy under the age of 19 as of Dec. 31 can participate. (Click on flyer at right for full-size version)

According to an e-mail forwarded to MDCFHA last week, the organizers will be getting indoor sticks for the boys to use and are hoping to come up with gloves, though that might be their only expense until organizers get uniforms.

Training starts next week and will be on Wednesday nights between 8pm and 10 pm at the SPark Indoor Training Center. The center is off Route 32 in Anne Arundel County. Directions are on the SPark website.

For more details about the program e-mail Lee Swinscoe or Jesse Larson.

Tournaments scheduled in Rockville

November 17th, 2010

Champions Field House is hosting a couple traditional indoor tournaments in December and January and is trying a new informal 4v4 “fanatics” tournament format during the end-of-year holiday break.

The first traditional tourney is on Dec. 11 and has brackets for U14, U16 and U19 age groups. Cost will be $350 per team. Each team is guaranteed four games, with crossovers. The youngest group starts at 7 am and finishes at noon. The U16 group starts at 10 am and finishes at 3pm, with the U19s running between 2 pm and 7 pm.

Then on Jan. 17 (a Monday), the Martin Luther King holiday, there’s a second open tournament for the same three age groups. Cost is again $350 per team. Schedule is the same as in December, except that the U19s finish at 5 pm.

The “Field Hockey Fanatics” series is intended as a way for kids to keep up their fitness and stick skills during periods when indoor teams are often taking a break from tournament play. It’s also an opportunity for athletes not playing on an indoor team to get some experience indoors without the full commitment of the club season.

Players can sign up as an indivdual ($30) to be placed on a team or sign up as a team of four for $120. Teams can be four field players or three field players and a goalkeeper. Team must play in the bracket of the oldest member, meaning if one of the players is a high school junior and the rest sophomores, then the team has to play in the U19 bracket.

Teams are guaranteed three 12-minute games with crossovers.

The series will run on Dec. 28, Dec. 29 and Feb. 21.

Registration form for any of the tournaments above is here. Or you can visit the Champions website.
